Adopting a dog is a wonderful and life changing event However, it is not something to be taken lightly as getting a dog will have an impact on your life for many years.

The first thing that you will need to think about is what sort of dog you would like to adopt. Think about size, grooming, age and how much exercise it will need. You need to be sure that you can give your new companion the level of care they deserve.

There are plenty of rescue centers and shelter throughout the country. While some specialize in a particular breed, others are home to a mix of breeds and animals. A quick online search will bring up the adoption centers in your area. Once you have a list of potential shelters, do some background research. Make sure that the organization has a good reputation and it should be a not-for-profit business. Between $100 and $200 is a reasonable adoption fee.

When you visit the adoption center, the guides will give you some recommendations based on your situation and will guide you through the facility. While some people find their perfect dog straight away, others are faced with a decision. If you are unsure which dog you would like to adopt, go home and think about it and come back another day.
